Analysis Task 2

Neale stated that ‘genres are instances of repetition and difference’.

Discuss what this statement means in relation to the duel scene from The Magnificent 7, directed by Antoine Fuqua? Use specific  evidence from the scene to support your ideas.

In the Magnificent 7 duel scene we can see that 'genres are instances of repetition and difference'.

The setting of the scene is similar to many other western films. The setting is desert like, with a stable, ranches and a canyon in the background.in addition,we see horses at the start of the scene which is common for cowboys to ride on.

The protagonist in the scene shows some similarities and differences to a typical cowboy. In the scene he participates in a duel with another cowboy.Duels are a common feature of a western film. However, how he wins this duel is different to what we would expect. The person he is duelling against,is using an ordinary revolver pistol, whereas he uses a knife. This makes it even more impressive how he wins, and it challenges the old school way of duelling.

The costume he is wearing is typical for a western cowboy. He is seen wearing a waistcoat, leather boots and a hat. However, before the duel takes place he removes his hat. This illustrates how he is not a typical cowboy and also foreshadows that he is going to do something unusual in the duel.

Unlike the people around him who we assume to be white Americans,Arcade looks like his is of Asian or Hispanic origin.Again, this makes it even more impressive that he wins the duel,as he is essential beating a cowboy at his own game.

The antagonist in the clip,is called Billy Rocks. This is quite a general American name.On the other hand, the protagonist is referred to as Arcade. This is likely to be a nickname the fellow cowboys have given him,as his real name is to hard to pronounce for them. This shows that Arcade is completely different to general cowboys.

The duel represents the fight between a old fashioned cowboy and a modern cowboy. As the modern cowboy wins,it shows that cowboys have evolved a lot over time.

    Well done Ted,

This is a well-written response, that provides some genuine insights. Good use of inferences to suggest WHY Fuqua makes these changes.

EBI - aim to include a wider variety of Media Terminology in your response. Eg, mise en scene, cinematography terms, sybolism, iconic etc.

Representation of third world countries

In band aids Do They Know It's Christmas? song editing techniques show that there is hope for these people in poverty.A split screen shows an upset child and people passing buckets of water to each other. This indicates that the water is being sent to children like the one on screen. This encourages the audience to give to the charity,as they can see that their money would help those in poverty in third world countries. Also, this editing technique creates a positive mood as it shows that we can do something to help. In contrast,Unicefs Likes Don't save lives ad doesn't show much positivity and shows more urgency. The room which the two kids are in is filled with shadows and darkness. This low key lighting suggests that they are in danger and also exposes their vunerability.Camera techniques also showcase the childrens vunerablity. Gauntlett "Collective Identity" theory

Collective identity: Through media people can gain a sense of belonging to a group. There is satisfaction through this sense of belonging, which is more important than an individuals own identity. To what extent does the cover of this magazine demonstrate Gauntlett's 'collective identity' theory? Applying Gauntlets theory of collective identity to this magazine cover, the audience may realise that there are many other people like them.In Men's Health magazine we can see a picture of a topless male model who is muscular.Next to this is a feature article titled "Scrawny to brawny".Some of the audience will be encouraged by this,as they may be skinny themselves. This also shows them that there are other people that are in the same situation as them, which will make them feel more comfortable with how they look.  Through purchasing this magazine the audience may be rewarded with health tips. For example, one of the cover lines "Melt body-fat with sunshine...
