Discuss how the use of voiceover helps to create meaning

The voiceover says “I’m not cute”. The women’s facial expressions show this. She is biting down on her gum shield, which makes her seem aggressive. This challenges the stereotype that women are soft and “cute”.
In what ways could you argue that this shot challenges van Zoonen’s notion of objectification because of the meanings created by the use of sound, mise-en-scene and camerawork
Slow motion causes the reader to focus on the woman’s bottom. This suggests that women should display their bodies and be proud of them. Relating this to Van Zoonen’s theory, who believes that men look at women’s bodies as objects, this ad encourages women to embrace this.
What is the most effective media language technique used at this moment? How is this woman represented and how can it be linked to hooks and Gauntlett’s theory?

In the voiceover she says “the joy in my feet”.In the shot we can see that the women has one artificial leg,and is  missing one of her feet.Typically, people would be upset about missing a leg, however, this women is filled with joy.The producer wants to spread positivity to women  and show them that women can do anything, like this women, who is running with an artificial leg are positive.

What editing technique is used during this moment? What connotations does it create? What is the significance of the sports selected? How could you link it to Hall’s theory?

Slow motion allows us to see how powerful women are. In the shot on the left, we see a women rugby tackling another woman. From this we can see that the women being tackled, has been completely taken off her feet. This slow motion camera technique exaggerates the impact of the tackle . The sport itself is also significant, as rugby is typically seen as a “manly” game. This relates to Hall’s theory of representation, as society reduces women to a few characteristics, and do not expect them to be powerful or play certain sports.

To what extent does the still challenge stereotypes? How could you link it to the different waves of feminism and theories like van Zoonen and Butler.

The image on the left challenges the
What technique has been used in the following still and what does it suggest about womanhood?

An aerial shot has been used, which shows a group of women standing together. From this camera shot we cannot see each women individually, but see them as one.  This shows the unity they have with each other. This suggests that the producer wants women to group together. Also, the colours that are displayed symbolise the diversity amongst these women. These colours represent the individual women that make up the group, and how they are all different. This is another message from the producer, encouraging all women to unite, regardless of what religion or ethnicity they may be.

Adverts comparison

In the Tide advert women are encouraged to be housewives. The colour of the background in the Tide advert creates a cloud-like setting. In addition, the woman's facials expressions further support this. Her eyes looking upwards, makes it appear that she is fantasising over the product. This representation of women, encourages them to be stereo-typical housewives who like staying home and doing the washing up.Relating this to the time period,in the 1950's,men had returned from the war,so women were not needed to do their jobs anymore. On the other hand, in the national service advert in 1940 women were encouraged to join the national service. This is made very clear from the slogan, which reads "JOIN US IN A VICTORY JOB".In the 1950's many jobs were vacant as men had gone to join the army, which is why women were being persuaded to do "normal" jobs.
