Dizee Rascal

Look at how Goodwin's theory applies to Dizzee Rascals Dream?

In Dizzee Rascals Dream sound techniques are used to show us what Dizzee Rascals aspirations are.In the music video a soundtrack is playing, part of the chorus includes the line "if you don't have a dream, how are you gonna have a dream come true".Meanwhile in the video we can see Dizee Rascal and his puppet friends vandalising and stealing. This connotes that people that live in the hood should have more aspirations in life. Also,as we know Dizee rascal has been successful himself, therefore he may be trying to inspire others to be like him. This relates to Andrew Goodwins theory of music videos,as it shows a clear link between the music and the visuals.

Costumes and body language make this a typical rap video. In the video the youth puppets can be seen wearing hoodies. This type of clothing is what we expect to see on the "street",therefore, making it appropriate for the hip-hop genre. In one one of the still images we can see two people fist bumping each other, which is how London youth tend to  greet eachother. In addition,we  see common rapping hand getsures being used throughout the video.Furthermore, this music video supports Andrew Goodwins theory that music videos have genre characteristics.

Analysing how the key representional issues (ethnicity, age and gender) have been portray through the use of editing.

IN Dream editing techniques are used to show how young black poeple are discriminated. In the video cross cutting is used to cut between Dizee and the old white lady playing the piano. This editing technique allows us to see the lady's reaction to Dizee. At times her facial expressions connote that she is worried and flustered. Therefore, this suggests that society were afraid of young black people, due to their violence and agression.Considering this,we can relate the music video to Alvarado Et Al's theory that from the white persepctive other races are dangerous.

Editing techniques are also used to represent the character of young black males. In the video a lot of jump cuts are used. This connotes that the group of people are wild and disorientated. The producer has done this to project the idea that in society young black males are discriminated. This links with Et Al's theory again as is portrays black people as exotic.

Representation of third world countries

In band aids Do They Know It's Christmas? song editing techniques show that there is hope for these people in poverty.A split screen shows an upset child and people passing buckets of water to each other. This indicates that the water is being sent to children like the one on screen. This encourages the audience to give to the charity,as they can see that their money would help those in poverty in third world countries. Also, this editing technique creates a positive mood as it shows that we can do something to help. In contrast,Unicefs Likes Don't save lives ad doesn't show much positivity and shows more urgency. The room which the two kids are in is filled with shadows and darkness. This low key lighting suggests that they are in danger and also exposes their vunerability.Camera techniques also showcase the childrens vunerablity. The camera slowly zooms into one of the children. This represents how the polio virus is slowly getting closer to him. This causes the reader to feel ...

Gauntlett "Collective Identity" theory

Collective identity: Through media people can gain a sense of belonging to a group. There is satisfaction through this sense of belonging, which is more important than an individuals own identity. To what extent does the cover of this magazine demonstrate Gauntlett's 'collective identity' theory? Applying Gauntlets theory of collective identity to this magazine cover, the audience may realise that there are many other people like them.In Men's Health magazine we can see a picture of a topless male model who is muscular.Next to this is a feature article titled "Scrawny to brawny".Some of the audience will be encouraged by this,as they may be skinny themselves. This also shows them that there are other people that are in the same situation as them, which will make them feel more comfortable with how they look.  Through purchasing this magazine the audience may be rewarded with health tips. For example, one of the cover lines "Melt body-fat with sunshine...
