Dizee Rascal

Look at how Goodwin's theory applies to Dizzee Rascals Dream?

In Dizzee Rascals Dream sound techniques are used to show us what Dizzee Rascals aspirations are.In the music video a soundtrack is playing, part of the chorus includes the line "if you don't have a dream, how are you gonna have a dream come true".Meanwhile in the video we can see Dizee Rascal and his puppet friends vandalising and stealing. This connotes that people that live in the hood should have more aspirations in life. Also,as we know Dizee rascal has been successful himself, therefore he may be trying to inspire others to be like him. This relates to Andrew Goodwins theory of music videos,as it shows a clear link between the music and the visuals.

Costumes and body language make this a typical rap video. In the video the youth puppets can be seen wearing hoodies. This type of clothing is what we expect to see on the "street",therefore, making it appropriate for the hip-hop genre. In one one of the still images we can see two people fist bumping each other, which is how London youth tend to  greet eachother. In addition,we  see common rapping hand getsures being used throughout the video.Furthermore, this music video supports Andrew Goodwins theory that music videos have genre characteristics.

Analysing how the key representional issues (ethnicity, age and gender) have been portray through the use of editing.

IN Dream editing techniques are used to show how young black poeple are discriminated. In the video cross cutting is used to cut between Dizee and the old white lady playing the piano. This editing technique allows us to see the lady's reaction to Dizee. At times her facial expressions connote that she is worried and flustered. Therefore, this suggests that society were afraid of young black people, due to their violence and agression.Considering this,we can relate the music video to Alvarado Et Al's theory that from the white persepctive other races are dangerous.

Editing techniques are also used to represent the character of young black males. In the video a lot of jump cuts are used. This connotes that the group of people are wild and disorientated. The producer has done this to project the idea that in society young black males are discriminated. This links with Et Al's theory again as is portrays black people as exotic.

Adverts comparison

In the Tide advert women are encouraged to be housewives. The colour of the background in the Tide advert creates a cloud-like setting. In addition, the woman's facials expressions further support this. Her eyes looking upwards, makes it appear that she is fantasising over the product. This representation of women, encourages them to be stereo-typical housewives who like staying home and doing the washing up.Relating this to the time period,in the 1950's,men had returned from the war,so women were not needed to do their jobs anymore. On the other hand, in the national service advert in 1940 women were encouraged to join the national service. This is made very clear from the slogan, which reads "JOIN US IN A VICTORY JOB".In the 1950's many jobs were vacant as men had gone to join the army, which is why women were being persuaded to do "normal" jobs. Missrepresentation

1. In reality television women are portrayed as "bitchy" and jealous. In the magazine industry women are often used as objects and are presented in a sexualised way.TV anchors often dress less professionally than there male colleagues, and tend to wear clothing that is revealing of their bodies. There has been instances were female anchors have been told to change the way they look, innorder to enhance their beauty. However, society have grown to expect women to look a certain way,and if they dress too conservatively they are usually criticised. In most films males are given the role of the protagonist, and the women that do get a leading role are usually not taken as seriously, and are presented mainly as sex symbols. 2. Men are expected to be sporty. Also, men are expected to work, and earn all the money for there families, whilst their wives look after their childen.Men are also taught not to show emotion, and that crying shows weakness. 3. By the time the war was coming to a cl...
