Holiday work

Woman: From the magazine (left hand side) we can see that women are seen as sexual objects by men.The use of the tight frame intentionally brings the women to the centre of our attention.We can see that she is wearing no clothing,which would suggest that the publisher is encouraging us to look at her in a sexual way,encaptulating the views of men in that time period.The tight frame camera technique also represents how women where trapped into their roles as housewives. Continuity editing demonstrates how women were dependant on men for acceptance and protection.In the shot on the left we can see four shots presented in a chronological manner,,which captures a man walking towards a women whilst she is doing her makeup.The shot where the man reaches the woman is the largest on the page.As it is the largest picture,it infers that main importance of make-up is to meet the  expectations of men. van Zoonen: Ideology relating to gender is not fixed. It reflects the time period, society and culture. These ideas and beliefs are communicated through language. The Three waves of feminism The first wave of feminism (1830's-early 1900's) The focus in this wave of feminism was on legal issues,and primarily on the right to vote.In 1919 women were granted the right to vote. The second wave of feminism (1960's-1980's) The second wave of feminism focused on a wider range of issues like sexuality,reproductive rights,the workplace and domestic violence.Birth control was approved in 1960 and in 1968 the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission passed the amendment of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prevented discrimination based on sex in the workplace .
