Find examples from your historical magazine (Woman’s Realm) that support (or challenge) the view that variety, creativity and quality are limited.

2-3 examples from the cover to support/challenge this idea

The cover lines/feature articles used on the Woman's Realm cover are hows that magazine's in the 1960's lacked variety and creativity. Some of the feature articles and cover lines include a "treasury of homemaking" and "exciting new period of romance".These are all stereotypical female interests. This shows a lack of creativity,as this magazine doesn't challenge these ideologies and promote individuality. This relates to Stuart Hall's theory that stereotyping reduces people to a few simple characteristics.

On the other hand, the masthead completely contradicts this point. The masthead is Woman's Realm, with the word Realm written in larger, bolder font. The word realm means kingdom or land, therefore, the magazine suggests that woman run the world. This portrays women as powerful, which proves that this magazine doesn't lack variety,as typically men are seen as more powerful due to the patriarchal ideology that many people have.

Find examples from your contemporary non-mainstream magazine that support (or challenge) the view that its ownership allows for more varied and adventurous content

Huck is an example of a magazine that allows for more varied and adventurous content.Firstly, even the name of their issues represents how the magazine is different to other magazines, one that I read was called the defiance issue.Defiance means an open resistance. This sums up the magazine well,as they promote going against the "norm" and being different. The layout of the magazine itself also supports this ideology. For example, one picture is spread over two pages, which is unconventional,as most standard magazine would just have it on one page.

In the Ocalans angels article we can see that non-mainstream magazines allow for more varied and adventurous content. One example of this in the text is that it is set in Syria. Most magazines do not cover stories from this part of the world as they are not seen as relevant to us.In addition,it is dangerous to visit war torn countries like Syria.

The cover of Hucks Ocalan's angles article shows that non maistream magazines allow for more varied and adventurous content. The sub-heading in bold reads "Female Fighters".Most people in todays society wouldn't expect women to join the army,as their is a patriarchal ideology that men are are more powerful than women. Therefore, this magazine supports varied content.

In addition, the background of the cover shows that non mainstream magazines allow for more varied and adventurous content. The background shows a hilly landscape with dull grey clouds in the sky. This is very different to the typical glamorous and sunny backdrops that many mainstream magazines use. However, this magazine has been adventurous by showing the more gloomy aspects of life that other magazines tend to ignore.

Adverts comparison

In the Tide advert women are encouraged to be housewives. The colour of the background in the Tide advert creates a cloud-like setting. In addition, the woman's facials expressions further support this. Her eyes looking upwards, makes it appear that she is fantasising over the product. This representation of women, encourages them to be stereo-typical housewives who like staying home and doing the washing up.Relating this to the time period,in the 1950's,men had returned from the war,so women were not needed to do their jobs anymore. On the other hand, in the national service advert in 1940 women were encouraged to join the national service. This is made very clear from the slogan, which reads "JOIN US IN A VICTORY JOB".In the 1950's many jobs were vacant as men had gone to join the army, which is why women were being persuaded to do "normal" jobs.
